Conservation

where saving wildlife begins
At Banham Zoo, we believe zoos play a crucial role in driving global conservation efforts. By combining species protection, habitat restoration, education, conservation science, and community engagement, we can make a measurable impact on biodiversity, protect our planet, and work to save species from extinction.
Conservation requires us all, and we can't reach our goals without working together. That’s why why we embrace the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) ‘One Plan Approach’ in all our work.
Our goal is simple: to halt the decline of threatened species, restore vital ecosystems, and build a resilient, biodiverse world for the future.

How does Banham Zoo contribute to global conservation?
Banham Zoo works closely with international partners, following the IUCN’s 'One Plan Approach,' to make a measurable impact on global biodiversity, including species protection and ecosystem restoration. We also actively contribute to native species conservation projects, supporting habitat restoration and breeding programmes that help protect and reintroduce vulnerable species in the UK.
What is Banham Zoo’s role in breeding programmes?
As a proud member of BIAZA (British & Irish Association of Zoos & Aquariums) and EAZA (European Association of Zoos & Aquaria), Banham Zoo plays an essential role in International and European Breeding Programmes. These programmes ensure the genetic health and long-term survival of endangered species. Across Banham Zoo and Africa Alive, we participate in over 80 breeding programmes, supporting species such as the black-footed penguin, Amur tiger, blue-eyed black lemur, Somali wild ass, and Rüppell’s griffon vulture.
How can I support Banham Zoo’s conservation efforts?
You can support our work through donations, memberships, and participating in our fundraising events. Every contribution helps us make a difference for wildlife and the environment.
