Dwarf Zebu
Bos taurus
Here at Banham Zoo
In the heart of the zoo, you'll find Zee and Boo, our two playful dwarf zebu bulls. Arriving in June 2024, they have quickly become a favourite among visitors.
Descended from the larger Zebu cattle, this miniature breed is known for its small size and distinctive hump. Zee and Boo love to zoom around their habitat, often playing with enrichment toys provided by their keepers!
Where Do I Live?
India and Southern Asia
Zebu were originally bred in India and Southern Asia, but are now found across the world and are a very important cattle breed due to their hardiness and tolerance to heat.
What Do I Eat?
Cattle are grazers, feeding on grasses, however zebu will also browse leBird and other vegetation. They possess a fat-filled hump, just like a camel, which is used as an energy store during times of drought or low food availability.
How Do I Breed?
Dwarf zebu are pregnant for around 9 months and give birth to one calf.
