Here at Banham Zoo
Banham Zoo is home to a common genet named Tess. This nocturnal carnivore is known for her agility and sharp senses. Native to Africa and parts of Europe, genets have sleek, spotted coats and long tails that help with balance.
Tess is an excellent climber and a skilled hunter, using her keen eyesight and hearing to catch prey.
Where Do I Live?
Africa and Southern Europe
They are found in Africa and also southern Europe, where they are believed to have been introduced. Common genets prefer wooded areas and are often found near rivers and streams.
What Do I Eat?
Common genets are carnivorous (meat-eaters) animals and eat mainly small Mammals and birds. However they will also eat insects and fruit.
How Do I Breed?
Genets are pregnant for only around ten or eleven weeks. The young begin taking solid food at around two months old.

Lowest risk of endangerment.
Numbers of common genets are currently stable. However, in some areas their body parts are used for medicinal purposes and habitat loss may pose a threat in Ibiza. It is protected by law in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.
