The West African pygmy goat is one of the most sociable and playful animals at Banham Zoo. Located in the Farm Barn, our lively herd can often be seen foraging or bouncing around their outdoor area.
Did you know? Only the dominant female in the group will breed, and she almost always gives birth to twins!
Where Do I Live?
West Africa
There are many breeds of domesticated goat, spread throughout the world. Pygmy goats originate from West Africa.
What Do I Eat?
Goats are browsers and thrive in hilly, dry areas where other domestic livestock would be unable to find sufficient food.
How Do I Breed?
The female goat, or nanny, gives birth to one or two young, or kids, after a pregnancy of about 5 months. They are able to run and jump vigorously soon after birth.
