Meet Enya and Thiago, our resident maned wolves at Banham Zoo. This unique pair can often be seen exploring their habitat, foraging for enrichment activities created by our keepers, or searching for their favourite treat fruit!
Maned wolves are classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss, road collisions, and human-wildlife conflict across South America. As part of Banham Zoo's conservation initiative, Enya and Thiago are successfully part of the European Breeding Programme (EEP), contributing to the protection of their species.
Where Do I Live?
Soth America
The maned wolf is native to South America. Their natural habitat is grasslands, savannah and swampy areas. They have large territories, shared by a breeding pair.
What Do I Eat?
They are omnivores, eating meat and plants, with a varied diet including small Mammals, birds, insects and fruit. They stalk their prey and catch it with a high, swift fox-like pounce.
How Do I Breed?
After a pregnancy of around two months, between two and four pups are born in a hidden den. Pups are born with a black coat.
